Why Blue Light Acne Treatment is So Helpful at Getting Rid of Acne
One of the more effective ways to get rid of acne is with blue light therapy. Here is the reason blue light is effective in treating acne.
Many adults and around 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become plugged by a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Once a pore becomes plugged the bacteria within in the pore begin to multiple and infect adjoining tissue. This results in the redness and soreness often linked to acne.
There are several customary treatments connected with acne prevention. Eliminating excess oils from the skin is the most important step. Bacteria on the skin in then killed using a mild anti-bacterial cream or gel. Finally a mild exfoliant cream or gel is used to make it easier to loosen dead skin cells to allow them to be washed away. By reducing the three components essential for acne (excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) the vast majority of acne will be prevented.
After pores become plugged they form blackheads or whiteheads. These are tiny blemishes and vary as a result of the location of the plug. With a blackhead, the clog is near the surface where it will become oxidized and darken. When the clog is deeper into the pore, the surface can close in around the pore keeping it light in color which produces a whitehead.
Cells adjacent to the pore become red, irritated and constitute a pimple because the bacteria within the blocked pore begin multiplying. The region infected can grow and the size and magnitude of the blemish can expand away from the cells belonging to the pore. Pressure on the pimple can drive the infection into the sebaceous gland and in some cases rip open the cell structure permitting the infection to extend to lower layers in the skin.
You can appreciate how vital it is to kill the bacteria at the site of the pimple. With the bacteria eliminated, the cells should no longer be irritated and can begin to mend. Severe acne can often be dealt with with systemic medications like oral anti-biotics. Most less severe acne outbreaks may be treated successfully by therapies applied in the affected area.
Acne light treatment is one such localized therapy. Direct exposure to sunlight is known to help acne. But, full spectrum sunlight can harm the skin. So, scientists have investigated specific spectral ranges to determine what is effective against acne. One early investigation discovered that light in the blue-violet color range was particularly effective. This color range impacts an organic compound in the acne bacteria. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
Because acne bacteria multiply quickly, several treatments on consecutive days are often necessary to eliminate all the bacteria in a blemish. Once the bacteria are eliminated, the swelling decreases and the cells begin to heal.
The blue light may be delivered by lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent lamps, or even bright full spectrum light. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is just like an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. In addition, many dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on affected areas before the light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that exposed to blue light causes damage to certain skin cells.
While treatments from a dermatologist might cost several hundred dollars each, inexpensive home devices have found there way into the market. You can find a variety of devices on the market ranging is price from around $40 to several hundred dollars.
Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment takes a few treatments to kill the bacteria and several days for the skin to heal. So, this is not an overnight process. But many of us find blue light acne therapy more effective than benzoyl peroxide and less irritating to their skin.
