Making Printed PCBs with Laser Printers
In the past, if you wanted to make fabricate your own printed circuits, the most difficult task was transferring your designs to your PCB material. You had to choose between the specialized photo reproduction technique or the complicated trace transfer technique, which required a host of specialized tools like light boxes and special pens. Affordable home laser jet printers have made both of those tasks obsolete for the home printed circuit manufacturer.

The procedure is simple and quite inexpensive. The procedure requires only a laser jet printer, glossy photo paper, and a common clothing iron.
The Toner Transfer Method for Printed PCBs
1. Print a positive image of your PCB tracing at the exact scale you need it. Use your printer’s darkest and highest quality image settings
2. Cut away the excess paper leaving an edge just slightly larger than your PCB board
3. Prepare your copper by lightly sanding the surface with at least 400-grit sandpaper. Then clean the surface of your PCB material with rubbing alcohol. Remove any fingerprints left on the printable surface with a soft, lint-free cloth
4. Turn the iron to its highest setting and let it heat up for at least ten minutes. Turn off the steam feature or empty the water from the iron if you can’t
5. Lay your copper onto a heat-resistant surface. Place the iron on the copper to preheat the surface
6. Carefully set the printed traces onto the preheated PCB material and put the iron on both. Use even pressure to apply heat to the entire surface of the paper. Slowly move the iron around the surface to ensure that all areas of the tracing and copper receive heat. Apply heat for 3 to 5 minutes. When you can begin to see the traces through the back of the paper, the transfer is done
7. Next, submerge the board, with the paper still on it, in a container of hot water. The tracing will be left behind on the copper’s surface after the paper has time to dissolve in the water bath, at least 15 to 20 minutes
