SQL Server Databases: Five Typical Mistakes In Creation and Maintenance

The creation and maintenance of a SQL server database environment is no simple task. Quite a few parameters regarding troubleshooting, support and design must be considered. Making mistakes in these areas or missing important details will makes these tasks much more difficult.

Find out about SQL server monitor benefits.

These are 5 typical mistakes that occur in the creation and maintenance of a SQL server database environment. There are certainly more, but these are a few that you should be aware of.

1. No Backup Plan
By failing to backup your databases fairly often you are opening yourself up for big problems. Proper backup procedures include a backup plan that 1) makes regular backups, 2) tests your ability to retrieve and restore data from backup systems, and 3) uses alternative locations other than the database server for data storage. Be sure to backup early and often. You will never want to come across a scenario where you don't have the backed up data.

2. Use of Ad Hoc Queries
Stored procedures on the application level should be the only way a user can access the database. An Ad Hoc query enables users to write their very own code against the database with various different permissions. Stored procedures enable only EXECUTE permissions preserving data integrity and providing improved performance through compiling and caching. Ideal SQL optimization starts with getting rid of all or most of these ad hoc queries.

3. Not Testing Correctly
Similar to having an inferior backup plan, putting untested code into production can open you up to some big problems. Not providing for beta and on-going testing is also a mistake. An optimal pre-production test should be as similar as possible to the production environment. Smaller test databases don’t always scale well to fully functioning production environments. Testing now is always better than fixing later.

Discover more advantages of SQL optimization.

4. Lack of Monitoring
You can’t expect to flick the switch and have your databases run perfectly without performance issues. Continuing SQL optimization will require you to constantly perform performance monitoring to be sure that all users are getting a seamless experience. Lack of or inadequate monitoring runs the risk of applications and queries slowing down performance by consuming too many system resources. SQL server queries and hardware environments must be monitored and optimized to ensure proper performance. SQL monitors give DBAs a historical view of trend data to help them create a plan to tune the database and improve performance.

5. No Change Management Process
There needs to be a lot of thought put into changing even the most stable production environments. It requires the appropriate testing, planning, and implementation processes. Utilizing a process for change management will provide improved structure for changes that need to be made. Documentation of how, when, and why database changes are to occur enables quick reversions in case database changes don’t go as planned. Thorough pre-production tests must also be a piece in the change management puzzle. One simple hint: document everything.
